What makes a good character prompt
A strong character concept needs a bit of contrast. “A knight” is generic. “A clumsy and kind elderly fox-spirit knight wearing armor that is slightly too big, who hums when nervous” already has a story. The generator combines:
- Species – human, elf, robot, catfolk, ghost, fairy and more.
- Role – what they do: baker, detective, monster hunter, cartographer.
- Age – from child to elderly, which changes proportions and posture.
- Personality – the attitude you’ll show in their pose and expression.
- Outfit – a clear starting point for costume design.
- Quirk – the one detail people will remember.
- Palette – four colors to keep the design consistent. Tap a swatch to copy its hex code.
How to design your OC step by step
- Silhouettes first. Draw three quick black shapes with different body types and choose the most readable.
- Pose for personality. A shy character stands differently from an overconfident one.
- Design the outfit. Use the outfit as a base, then add details that fit the role.
- Apply the palette. Use the darkest color for shadows or hair, the lightest for skin or highlights.
- Make a mini sheet. Front view, a facial expression or two, and a close-up of the quirk.
Ideas for using the character generator
- Generate a party of four and draw them as a team.
- Turn your OC into a sticker or chibi version.
- Pair your hero with a beast from the mythical creature generator.
- Place your character in a scene from the drawing prompt generator by choosing the People category.
For color practice, the color palette prompt generator gives you five-color palettes, and our sketchbook ideas article has a full section on character pages.
Frequently asked questions
What is an OC?
OC stands for “original character” – a character you create yourself rather than one from an existing book, game or show.
What does the character generator include?
Species, role or job, age group, personality, outfit, a memorable quirk and a four-color palette you can tap to copy as hex codes.
Can I use these characters in my comics or games?
Yes. The combinations are random and the characters you design are yours to use.
How do I make my OC look unique?
Focus on a strong silhouette, a limited color palette and one memorable detail – the quirk is designed to give you that detail.
