Drawing Randomizer

The drawing randomizer doesn’t just tell you what to draw – it tells you how. Each roll gives you a random subject, one to three drawing rules and a time limit. It’s part game, part workout, and a brilliant way to break out of drawing the same way every day.

How the drawing randomizer works

  1. Choose how many rules you want – one for a gentle twist, three for a real challenge.
  2. Press “Randomize everything.” You get a subject, your rules and a time limit.
  3. Re-roll only what you want. “New subject” keeps the rules; “New rules” keeps the subject.

The rules come from a list of twenty classic art-school constraints, including:

  • Use your non-dominant hand
  • Draw it in one continuous line
  • Use only three colors
  • Only use shapes – no lines
  • Draw only the shadow
  • No erasing allowed
  • Draw it from an unusual angle

Why constraints make you a better artist

When you can draw anything in any way, your brain chooses the comfortable option. Constraints remove that option. Blind contour and one-line drawings train hand-eye coordination. Limited palettes teach color harmony. Time limits teach you to capture the essential shapes first. Even “draw it upside down” helps by tricking your brain into seeing shapes instead of symbols.

The results won’t always be pretty – that’s the point. A page of wobbly, rule-bound sketches often teaches more than one careful drawing.

Drawing randomizer games

  • Rule roulette: each person in a group gets the same subject but different rules.
  • Escalation: start with one rule, then add one more every round.
  • Best of three: draw three randomized challenges and vote on the favorite.
  • Stream challenge: let your chat press the button and you draw whatever comes up.

Frequently asked questions

What is a drawing randomizer?

It’s a tool that randomizes not only what you draw, but how you draw it. You get a subject plus rules such as “draw it in one continuous line” or “use only three colors”, and a time limit.

Why would I want rules?

Rules, or constraints, push you out of habits. Drawing with your non-dominant hand loosens your lines; a three-color limit teaches color choices; a time limit stops overworking.

Can I keep the subject and change only the rules?

Yes. Use “New rules” to re-roll only the rules, or “New subject” to keep the rules and change what you draw.

Is the drawing randomizer good for art streams?

Very. Viewers love seeing an artist take on silly rules live. Read out the rules, start the timer and draw.
